Our Philosophy

We believe in a communicative approach, focusing on practical conversation skills in a supportive and fun environment. Our mission is to provide engaging and effective English education that empowers students from age 8 through seniors to communicate confidently in real-world situations.

We serve learners across all life stages with specialized programs: Elementary students (ages 8-12), Junior High students, High School students, working adults, and seniors (60+), each receiving age-appropriate instruction in our small-class environment.

Originally from the United States, Richard Pavonarius has called Japan home for over 35 years. His extensive experience teaching English to Japanese students from elementary age through seniors has given him unique insights into the most effective learning methods for Japanese speakers across all life stages.

Richard had experience working in education-related IT in Tokyo for nearly 20 years, having worked for a variety of companies, from large international corporations to small businesses, and is an expert in the use of computer technology and AI in education.

Richard's patient and encouraging teaching style helps even the most shy students gain confidence. He believes that learning English should be enjoyable and practical, focusing on skills that students can immediately use in their daily lives. He specializes in research-based approaches for mature learners.

Senior Instructor & Co-Founder

Also from the United States, Thersa "Terrie" Matsuura brings over 35 years of Japan experience to every lesson. As a published author and Bram Stoker Award finalist, she combines professional writing expertise with innovative teaching methods that make learning English an enjoyable experience for learners of all ages and backgrounds.

Terrie is a graduate of the prestigious Clarion West writing workshop and recipient of the Horror Writers Association's Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley Scholarship. Her published works include "The Book of Japanese Folklore" (Adams Media, 2024) and the acclaimed short story collection "The Carp-Faced Boy and Other Tales," which earned her Bram Stoker Award recognition.

As host of the popular "Uncanny Japan" podcast, Terrie shares her deep understanding of Japanese culture with international audiences. Her fluency in both languages and decades of cultural immersion give her unique insights into the challenges Japanese learners face when acquiring English.

Terrie has a special gift for helping students overcome their fear of speaking English. She creates a supportive environment where students feel safe to make mistakes and learn from them, building natural confidence along the way. Her empathetic approach particularly benefits mature learners.
